WE  ARE  OPEN  AT  LAST

SAVOY YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE OPENS ITS DOORS

After three years of fund raising SYCA opened the new centre, comprising of a club room/cafe, sports hall with stage, music studio, small meeting room, function room and offices for youth services , adminoffice, five-a-side/basketball court, new drive and parking for 28 cars in May 2010

Phase1 has seen the building of 4 new offices, lift shaft, lobby and remodelling of internal walls to form new toilets and showers, disabled toilet, cafe store, furniture store and admin office. Ground source heat pumps are installed to provide underfloor heating. We are already a carbon neutral building with ambitions to be a renewable energy flagship

Phase 2, which includes an outdoor gated 5-a-side/basketball play court and parking for 28 cars, sports hall/performance area with folding stage, clubroom with  cafe facilities and upstairs function/homework room with adjoining coffee kitchen,is nearly finished. However we stilll need £50,000 of funding, some from local grants, and the rest to be raised from local sponsorship and events. We especially need money for a 6 person lift, new insulated roof for the sports hall and  to put finishing touches to the carpark and grounds.

We are pleased to be able to open the new centre this year to enable us to bring together people from all sections of the community in pleasant surroundings.  We have opened a community café,with our renowned dinner chef Janet Uttley in charge of the volunteers. We offer the sports hall with extending stage for our local football juniors, badminton,  minitennis, table tennis, dance and drama groups.

We  provide a function room/dance studio suitable for our craft group,  more dance classes, games afternoon,  training and exhibitions, and for hire.

All main halls are offered at the starting price of £10 an hour for hire, £25 for the music studio with technician support, and £7.50 for small conference room.

We are working with our partners Attitude Academy to provide a range of active activities for several age groups, including Breakdance, Musical theatre and Zumba -see our noticeboard for details.

Kirklees Young Peoples Service  use the building five nights per week for youth activities. including two open access nights and junior session for 8 to 12s.

We have achieved carbon neutral status, using several renewable technologies, as we wish to promote sustainable ways of living in our area.  We have the support of a local group to maintain a green margin and small garden.

In the present economic downturn we hope to be able to help with SURESTART, Connexions, and are canvassing our area about a credit union.

We work with four other associations to apply for European funding in our area though the East Peake Innovation Partnership.  Skelmanthorpe Youth and Community Association exists as described in our constitution aims and objectives( see separate page).

Our lifeblood is our volunteer base which is growing to support our varied activities.

Our new website has a forum for local debate and comment.

We wish to promote our local area with regard to leisure, tourism and business by facilitating a new business forum.

We are open to participation and suggestions from all sections of the community.  For our list of supporters and users please see other page.  The sky’s the limit!

Come and join us.
